This week in math, Señor Vicent taught the students about equivalent fractions. It's a tricky topic, but the students did so well. We use pieces of paper pizza cutouts to help, and also parts of what we call, a bar of chocolate.

On Friday, we celebrated Arie's birthday!!! What a fun day :) The students really enjoy having "Pepé the Iguana" as their buddy for the day during birthdays. And, of course, he only speaks Spanish!

Our third graders are lucky enough to be able to participate in Book Clubs with their classmates every few days. I am seeing some great reading, questioning, analyzing, and discussing of texts. This week, the students started learning about Elapsed Time and solving problems with time. We learned a new strategy from Mrs. Gagnon, the third grade English teacher, and the students are doing so well. Using a t-chart, students add time little by little until the end time is reached. For example, problem number one in the picture starts at 7:30 and final time is 8:15. Students start by adding 30 minutes, to 8:00, and then 15 minutes to 8:15. Our time has been reached! By adding time little by little, and always writing a new time, students are able to find elapsed time much simpler :)

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY
What a fun day! Students enjoyed Spanish Language Arts centers today, with some pertaining to Valentine's Day. At one of the centers, they were able to write about what it means to be a good friend, and/or what they need to do to be a good friend. Another center was copying a short story about Valentine's Day into their Spanish notebooks. We are really working on punctuation, handwriting, and spacing between words. After lunch, students were able to write a secret letter to one of their friends in class, writing about what makes them a good friend, what they want to know about them, and any questions they have about that person. All their folders are up because they didn't want anyone to peek! |
We continue to have fun in our Spanish centers at least twice a week. At one center, students work on handwriting, spacing, and punctuation by copying a short story in Spanish. One center is reading, usually themed books for science or social studies units (this past week they continued to read about the Solar System). This past Tuesday, we were lucky enough to have a WSU visitor, Señorita H, who helped with our writing center. Vicent lead the guided reading center, and I was with the students at the large group table practicing present, past, and future tense of different Spanish verbs. They have done IR (to go) and JUGAR (to play). |
Students this week learned about standard notation, a written number, and expanded form, separating that number into groups. They had a lot of fun with this activity. They also had to put the numbers in order from least to greatest. I am so impressed on how these third graders are progressing in math!!!
