HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! We are so excited to be back in third grade and back working hard for the new year. We had a wonderful week back, and it was so fun to hear about everyone's break! Julia is still in Spain all this week but will return next Monday!
We are really working hard on math this half of the year, as the MCA's are coming up quickly in the Spring. The students are loving our math and it makes me so happy when they ask for more and more practice in class. They are loving three digit addition and subtraction! This week we have started a new morning routine. After English with Mrs. Ogren, they will complete "Number of the Day" work in their math notebooks. Every day the number will change, and they have to write the number 5 different ways. 1. Add and subtract 1 from the number 2. Draw the number with pictures 3. Write the number in words 4. Write the number in standard form 5. Write two equations for the number This has ended up being a great transition time and the students are having a lot of fun! |
At the end of the week, the students received a surprise from Señor Alberto!!! Alberto was one of the SLIP interns last year, and he just sent the students a letter all the way from Spain!! Mrs. Siemback came to read it to our classroom. In the letter he included an individual note to EACH AND EVERY STUDENT!!! They all felt so special when their individual note was read...thanks to Alberto!
Since the students now have language arts only in English, I revamped our schedule and decided to start Spanish Language Arts centers twice a week, which we will be implementing now until the end of the year. I am realizing that students aren't getting as much time to read, write, and really focus on the Spanish language. We want to make sure while they are now having English, they are still progressing in Spanish. |
CENTER 1: Guided Reading with Señorita Kuhn- Reading a text together, asking questions, talking about vocabulary, etc.
CENTER 2: Writing with Señor Vicent- The students have been choosing various photos and making up imaginary stories while writing in Spanish. This may not always be the exact activity, but they will be writing in Spanish at Center 2.
CENTER 3: IPads- Students will be reading on the IPads at this individual center. This first week we couldn't figure out the RAZ KIDS so it was free play, but starting next week students will be able to choose leveled Spanish books to read.
CENTER 4: Copying a text- I think this center will be so beneficial to the students. They will be copying a text into their notebooks. I really wanted them to practice handwriting, capitals and lowercases letters, sentences, and seeing the format of Spanish sentences. They have loved this center and I am seeing so much progress! Every week they will copy a different story into their Spanish notebooks.
CENTER 5: Free Read- The students get a chance to free read in Spanish. If we start incorporating more Social Studies into the centers, than the themes of the book choices might be more focused on one subject, but for now, just free reading in Spanish.
This week in math, we have been working a lot on rounding to the nearest tens and hundreds. The students are doing great! They had a lot of fun playing this game with partners. You roll a dice, and spin the spinner twice, to get two three digit numbers. You add the exact numbers, and the rounded numbers, and the difference in numbers is your points for that turn. |
